INNOVADOR HASTA EL LÍMITE DE LA CREACIÓN
BIG está formado por un grupo de arquitectos, diseñadores, constructores y pensadores distribuidos en dos oficinas principales en Nueva York y Copenhague, dedicados a la arquitectura, urbanismo, investigación y desarrollo. La oficina actualmente cuenta con un gran número de proyectos en Europa, América del Norte, Asia y Oriente Medio. Su co-fundador Bjarke Ingels acaba de ser honrado con el premio del Wall Street Jornal como Innovador del Año, por ser el individuo más creativo, agitador y con más influencia del mundo. No es un broma, no, de acuerdo a Richard Saul Wirman, "BIG ha creado estructuras salvajemente expresivas, incluyendo la re-invención radical del rascacielos neoyorquino, comprometiéndose al mismo tiempo con la sustentabilidad y la filosofía de una Utopía pragmática."
La arquitectura de BIG emerge del análisis cuidadoso de cómo la vida contemporánea evoluciona y cambia, debido a las influencias del intercambio multicultural, los flujos económicos globales y las tecnologías de la comunicación, que unidos requieren nuevas perspectivas en arquitectura y organización urbana.
BIG cree que para poder afrontar los retos actuales, la arquitectura debe aprovechar un campo que ha sido inexplorado, como una forma de alquimia pragmática BIG crea arquitectura mezclando los ingredientes convencionales como vivienda, ocio, trabajo, estacionamiento y compras.
BIG ha tomado un papel protagonista en la creación del nuevo distrito de Copenhaguen, conocido como Ørestad (ver la Edición 9 de Tierra para más proyectos en Ørestad) comenzando con la construcción de VM Houses, dos edificios unidos con forma de una V y una M cuando los ves desde arriba. Las casa VM fueron diseñados por PLOT=BIG+JDS, para darle iluminación natural y las mejores vistas a la mayoría de residentes.
La Montaña (The Mountain) es la 2ª generación de las VM Houses – también en asociación con PLOT=BIG+JDS, para el mismo cliente, tamaño y calle. Sin embargo el objetivo de este edificio fue ofrecer 2/3 partes de estacionamiento y 1/3 de viviendas. No muchos arquitectos se han atrevido a colocar viviendas con terrazas verdes encima de un estacionamiento. "Más que hacer dos edificios separados -estacionamientos y viviendas - decidimos unir las dos funciones en una relación simbiótica. El área del estacionamiento necesita ser conectado a la calle y las viviendas necesitan luz, aire fresco y vistas, así que todos los departamentos tienen jardines en el techo, vistas impresionantes y apuntan hacia el sol" dice Bjarke Ingels. Los jardines de techo consisten en una terraza y jardín con plantas que cambian según la época del año. El edificio también cuenta con un sistema de riego que mantiene los jardines y lo único que separa el departamento de los jardines es una fachada de vidrio con puertas corredizas que aportan luz y aire fresco.
La Casa 8 es la siguiente de esta serie, también en Ørestad, se está creando un edificio con forma de "ocho" con alturas variables para ofrecer una "sensación única de comunidad con jardines y caminos que te recuerda a un pueblo italiano de montaña." Con vistas espectaculares sobre el Canal de Copenhague y los espacios de Kalvebod Faelled, Casa 8 provee viviendas además de oficinas en un solo edificio. "Casa 8 es una cuadra perimetral que se convierte en un nudo, enredándose para maximizar la calidad de vida de sus habitantes," dice Bjark Ingels, Co-fundador de BIG.
Entre otros proyectos de BIG podemos encontrar el refrescante Pabellón Danés de la Expo Shanghái 2010; La Galería de Arte Nacional de Groenlandia, que físicamente y visualmente armoniza con la naturaleza dramática del país, crea una simbiosis perfecta entre la naturaleza y el edificio; el proyecto de Baño en el puerto de Copenhague donde se bañan los daneses en verano; el West 57th Street, el novedoso y muy premiado rascacielos en Nueva York; y la increíble planta de energía a partir de residuos en las afueras de Copenhague: Amager Bakke, donde se le da una función adicional a la estructura añadiendo una bajada de esquí público en su techo.
¿Hablando de ser creativos y hacer que la superficie de nuestro planeta sea un lugar mejor para vivir? Ciertamente, creemos que BIG definitivamente está en el camino correcto hacia la innovación, diseño contemporáneo y sustentabilidad.

INNOVATIVE TO THE LIMIT OF CREATION
BIG is a Copenhagen and New York based group of architects, designers, builders and thinkers; operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, research and development. The office is currently involved in a large number of projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. Their co-founder Bjarke Ingels has just been honored as Wall Street Journal's Innovator of the Year awarded for being the most creative, disruptive, and influential person in the world today. It's not a joke, no, according to Richard Saul Wurman "BIG has created wildly expressive structures, including the radical re-imagining of the New York high-rise apartment building, the commitment to sustainability and the philosophy of pragmatic utopianism."
BIG's architecture emerges out of a careful analysis of how contemporary life constantly evolves and changes. Not least due to the influence from multicultural exchange, global economical flows and communication technologies that all together require new ways of architectural and urban organization.
BIG believes that in order to deal with today's challenges, architecture can can move advantageously into a field that has been largely unexplored. Like a form of programmatic alchemy BIG creates architecture by mixing conventional ingredients such as living, leisure, working, parking and shopping.
BIG have taken a leading role in the creation of the new district of Copenhagen, known as Ørestad, (you can find more about Ørestad in Edition 9 of Tierra) starting with the VM Houses, shaped like a V and M when you see them from above. The VM Houses are designed by PLOT= BIG+JDS, being PLOT's idea of how to give the greatest amount of light and the best view to the largest number of residents.
The Mountain is the 2nd generation of the VM Houses – also with PLOT=BIG+JDS, for the same client, same size and same street. The program, however, is 2/3 parking and 1/3 living. Not many architects have come up with such an idea of placing terraced housing with green gardens on top of a parking lot. "Rather than doing two separate buildings next to each other – a parking and a housing block – we decided to merge the two functions into a symbiotic relationship. The parking area needs to be connected to the street, and the homes require sunlight, fresh air and views, thus all apartments have roof gardens facing the sun, and amazing views" says Bjarke Ingels. The roof gardens consist of a terrace and a garden with plants changing character according to the changing seasons. The building has a huge watering system which maintains the roof gardens. The only thing that separates the apartment and the garden is a glass façade with sliding doors to provide light and fresh air.
The 8 House is the next in this series, also in Ørestad, creating an eight-shaped building with varying heights in order to offer a "unique sense of community with small gardens and pathways that remind you of the intimacy of an Italian hill town." With spectacular views toward the Copenhagen Canal and Kalvebod Faelled's protected open spaces, 8 House provides residences to people as well as office spaces to the city's business and trade in one single building. "8 House is a perimeter block that morphs into a knot, twisting and turning to maximize the life quality of its many inhabitants," Bjarke Ingels, Founding Partner of BIG.
Among BIG's projects you can also find the refreshing Danish Expo Pavilion (Shanghai 2010); the Greenland National Art Gallery which is both physically and visually in harmony with the dramatic nature, just like life in Greenland is a symbiosis of the nature; the Copenhagen Harbor Bath project where Danes bathe in summer; the highly awarded West 57th Street skyscraper in New York; and the incredible new waste-to-energy treatment plant on the outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark: Amager Bakke Energy Plant, gives a secondary function to the structure by adding a public ski slope on to its roof.

El club Josephine Roxy de Fred Mafra
Inspirado en un panal de abejas, el arquitecto Fred Mafra rediseñó su propio club nocturno, ya todo un ícono de la noche en Bello Horizonte, Brasil, desde 2007. "Reformar tu propio proyecto te da una libertad especial que viene del conocimiento profundo del espacio que estás trabajando y la confianza de ser el propietario de tu trabajo" dice Mafra.
Sus dos pistas de baile, tres bares, cuatro áreas VIP, patio para fumadores con techo deslizable, hacen que este enorme club sea el lugar perfecto para todos los gustos. El diseño está basado en figuras geométricas con ángulos extremos como hexágonos y prismas que se repiten resultando en un techo texturizado, luces tridimensionales en constante movimiento y una estética contemporánea perfecta para pasar una noche de baile y diversión.
Su estética, ciertamente deslumbrante, se atribuye a las brillantes luces LED que destellan y cambian de color al ritmo de la música, creando una extraña sensación de estar fusionado con el movimiento de los bailadores. Cada espacio, esquina y ángulo cambia dependiendo donde estés posicionado, sin perder de vista la elegancia, la conveniencia, el escapismo, la flexibilidad, la tecnología necesarias para pasar una noche exitosa, considerando al mismo tiempo el respeto por las personas con necesidades especiales.
La fachada también cambió radicalmente, siendo blanca, ahora es completamente negra, con 20 paneles de LED que cambian de color, dándole un aspecto espectral y fluido, casi como una nave espacial aterrizado para ofrecer lo mejor de la noche al público de Bello Horizonte.
La combinación de texturas, colores y formas son toda una lección para arquitectos y diseñadores modernos, quienes pueden aprender mucho de la experiencia de Fred Mafre. Animamos a nuestros lectores a seguir su ejemplo en otras partes del mundo. ¡Déjense llevar por la imaginación!

The Fred Mafra Josephine Roxy Nightclub
Inspired by a honeycomb, the architect Fred Mafra re-designed his own nightclub, already an icon of the nightlife in Bello Horizonte, Brazil since 2007. "Reforming your own project brings you a special freedom that comes from already mastering the space you are working with, plus from the confidence of being the owner in your work," Mafra says.
Two dance floors, three bars, four VIP areas and a smoker's patio make this enormous nightclub the ideal place for everyone. The design is based on geometric figures with extreme angles like hexagons and prisms that repeat themselves resulting in a fantastic texturized ceiling, three dimensional lighting in constant movement and a state-of-the-art aesthetics for an unforgettable night out in the city.
The club's trippy design can be attributed to the brightly flashing LED lights, which line the asymmetrical shapes and create a perceptive shift for clubgoers every time they move their bodies. Each space, angle and corner changes depending on where you see it from, and never loses touch with elegance and convenience, nor the need for escapism, flexibility and technology required for nightclubers. It was also designed regarding accessibility and mobility for people with special needs.
The façade also changed radically, from being bright white to dark black and 20 LED panels that change color, giving it a spectral and fluid look, nearly as if a space ship had landed to offer the best of nightlife to the inhabitants of Bello Horizonte.
This combination of texture, color and shape are definitely a lesson for contemporary architects and designers from around the world, whom can learn a lot from Fred Mafre's experience. We encourage our readers to follow his steps. Just let yourself be guided by your imagination.
